Tattoo Removal recovery — week by week

What healing actually looks like — week by week — for tattoo removal.

Recovery timeline

  1. Day 0
Treated area appears 'frosted' immediately, then transitions to redness, swelling, and possibly blistering over 24–48 hours.
  2. Days 1–7
Scabbing and peeling. Don't pick — pigment clearance happens via lymphatic uptake, not via scab loss. Cool compresses, antibiotic ointment if blistering.
  3. Weeks 1–8
Treated area heals; pigment continues to fade for 6–8 weeks via lymphatic clearance.
  4. Between sessions
Sun avoidance over treated area. SPF essential. Sessions spaced 6–8 weeks minimum.
  5. Months 6–24
Complete clearance achievable for most tattoos with appropriate device and protocol.

Quick reference

Back to work
Same day; visible scabbing for 1–2 weeks.

What's normal vs. what to call about

Some swelling, bruising, asymmetry, numbness, and tightness are expected in the first weeks. Sudden severe pain, fever above 101°F, drainage, spreading redness, or one-sided swelling that worsens after improving warrant a same-day call to your surgeon.
