Breast Reduction recovery — week by week
What healing actually looks like — week by week — for breast reduction.
Recovery timeline
- Day 02–4 hour surgery. Surgical bra. Drains in some cases. Discharged same day or overnight.
- Days 1–3Pain manageable on prescribed medication. Surprisingly less painful than expected for most patients.
- Week 1Most return to desk work day 7–10. No lifting.
- Weeks 2–6Light activity. Surgical bra 24/7.
- Months 1–3Final shape begins to emerge. Most patients report immediate relief from back/shoulder symptoms.
- Months 6–12Scars mature. Sensation in breasts and nipples gradually returns for most.
Quick reference
- Back to work
- 7–10 days for desk; 3–4 weeks for physical work.
What's normal vs. what to call about
Some swelling, bruising, asymmetry, numbness, and tightness are expected in the first weeks. Sudden severe pain, fever above 101°F, drainage, spreading redness, or one-sided swelling that worsens after improving warrant a same-day call to your surgeon.
