Finasteride recovery — week by week
What healing actually looks like — week by week — for finasteride.
Recovery timeline
- Months 0–3No visible change. May notice initial shedding (positive sign — old hairs cycling out).
- Months 3–6Slowing of shedding for most patients. First subtle improvements in density.
- Months 6–12Visible improvement in 60–70% of patients. Photographs every 6 months document change.
- Months 12–24Maximum benefit. Plateau is the goal — maintenance, not regrowth.
- LifelongBenefit reverses 6–12 months after stopping.
What's normal vs. what to call about
Some swelling, bruising, asymmetry, numbness, and tightness are expected in the first weeks. Sudden severe pain, fever above 101°F, drainage, spreading redness, or one-sided swelling that worsens after improving warrant a same-day call to your surgeon.
